Marcel Breuer was a student at the Bauhaus when he began experimenting with tubular steel as a way to build a more transparent chair. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stjil movement, Breuer reduced the form of the classic club chair to its elementary lines and planes.
FEATURES
A classic KnollStudio design, produced to Breuer’s original specifications. The KnollStudio logo and Breuer’s signature, Marcel, are stamped into the base of the chairs.
CONSTRUCTION
Frame is seamless tubular steel with a polished chrome finish. Thick cowhide or Spinneybeck belt leather and haired leather, as well as natural canvas. Opaque, plastic, click-in-place glides are included for optional placement when used on hard floors.
FINISHES
Natural canvas is added to the thick cowhide leather covering options available in black, light brown or white beige. The Spinneybeck Belting Leather upholstery option is available in a wide range of neutral and bright colors. The Spinneybeck Haired Hide upholstery option is available in a variety of distinctive colors. The frame has a polished chrome finish.
PRIZES
The Museum of Modern Art Award, 1968. Recognition as a “work of art” Germany, 1982.
